Das neue Outlook für Windows führt keine COM- und VSTO-Add-ins mehr aus. Dort laufen ausschließlich Web-Add-ins auf Basis von Office.js. Jedes gewachsene Add-in, das heute tief im Outlook Object Model sitzt, muss den Weg dorthin also gehen — oder es verschwindet mit dem Umstieg Ihrer Nutzer.
Das Unangenehme daran: Diese Migration verlangt beides gleichzeitig. Man muss den alten Code wirklich verstehen — COM, MAPI, Redemption, die Eigenheiten des Objektmodells — und zugleich wissen, was Office.js kann und was eben nicht, denn ein Teil der alten Funktionen hat dort schlicht kein Gegenstück und muss anders gelöst werden. Entwickler, die beide Seiten kennen, sind selten geworden.
Ich habe die Outlook-Integration eines Enterprise-Produkts elf Jahre lang verantwortet — VSTO/COM auf dem Desktop und das Web-Add-in für „Outlook on the web". Genau diese Kombination ist der Weg von A nach B.
The new Outlook for Windows no longer runs COM or VSTO add-ins. Only web add-ins built on Office.js work there. Every mature add-in sitting deep in the Outlook Object Model has to make that journey — or it disappears the moment your users move.
The awkward part: this migration demands both sides at once. You have to genuinely understand the old code — COM, MAPI, Redemption, the quirks of the object model — while knowing what Office.js can do and, crucially, what it can't, because some of the old behaviour simply has no counterpart and needs a different design. Engineers who know both sides have become rare.
I owned the Outlook integration of an enterprise product for eleven years — VSTO/COM on the desktop and the web add-in for "Outlook on the web". That combination is exactly the road from A to B.

Since early 2026 I've been advising the City of Freiburg on the question everyone is asking right now: where does AI genuinely hold up — and where does it only cost time and trust? I look at the process first, not the tool. Whatever follows has to fit long-grown IT structures and survive data-protection requirements, otherwise it's a demo, not an operation.

Mein Weg ist ungewöhnlich — und genau das ist ein Vorteil. Ich habe in der Live-TV-Produktion angefangen: Echtzeit-3D-Grafik vor einem Millionenpublikum, ohne Toleranz für Fehler. Danach Medieninformatik (Dipl.-Inf.) in Berlin und ein Jahrzehnt Produktentwicklung für Enterprise-Sicherheitssoftware.
Diese Mischung ist der Grund, warum Kunden mich behalten: Ich schreibe produktionsreifes C#, denke aber genauso an die Menschen vor der Oberfläche, präsentiere souverän vor Stakeholdern und bleibe ruhig, wenn es brennt.
My path is unusual, and it's an advantage. I started in live TV production — real-time 3D graphics with millions watching and zero tolerance for failure — then studied media informatics (Dipl.-Inf.) in Berlin and spent a decade as a product engineer on enterprise security software.
That mix is why clients keep me around: I write production-grade C#, but I also think about the people using the interface, present comfortably to stakeholders, and stay calm when things are on fire.
